why do the onions at Wendy’s taste the way they do? I’ve never had onions anywhere else that taste like Wendy’s. What do they do to them?

now I’m curious, gonna need to stop by Wendy’s and ask for extra onion today

I’ve had the same question for years. I don’t like them at all, whatever they are using seems fairly unique as I’ve never had anything like them from another restaurant. I used to put my own on at home but I stopped going there a few years back.

They just taste old to me honestly… don’t get me wrong Wendy’s is rad! Totally my favorite over any of the other “drive thru” burger places but doesn’t change the fact the onions taste old.

Burger King used to have funny taste and onions too, but I don’t eat meat anymore so I couldn’t tell you, but I’m curious if their onions still taste different

Wendys really declined when they stopped using red onions imo

I only think it’s that the provider brings the product pre slices and washed. It happens in many restaurants having onions peeled and packaged in to tubs. Takes the spice sensation away a little more.

My guess is mandolin, and rinse under water. Takes the bite away.

My guess: they are sliced before they are frozen and distributed. Locations defrost them in batches.

I feel the same way about taco bell lettuce. I’m assuming it’s some sort of preservative.

I believe Wendy’s uses sweet onions

one thing I’ve seen people say about fast food onions, it’s dried onions and then watered up again — I have no idea if that’s going on here?

At my location they don’t “do” anything to them. They come pre-sliced and are panned to prep. The end.

I think the same as burger king. My friend worked at burger king and he said they slice all the vegetable before lunch time and they put them in bins and they sit at room temperature all day. I was always wondered how their onions had this dry mild taste to them.

i LOVE wendys onions, i always get a spicy chicken sandwich with extra mayo and extra onions

As a former employee, we do nothing to them lol they come prepackaged and presliced just like everything else.
InsidiousZombie
Sliced and rinsed/soaked in cold water

Slave labor like their tomatoes, perhaps?

I wish you divulged whether you enjoy or not? In a good or bad way?

Do you like the way they taste? I’m not sure if your post is positive or negative towards Wendy’s lol

It’s the armpit rub. Really sets them off.

If you give raw onions an ice bath, it takes away the “bite”. Since most Wendy’s workers in the thread say they arrive pre sliced, I’m thinking they were given an ice bath as part of their prep before landing at the location.
They come pre sliced. Cut them and stick them in a ziploc bag for a few days. That should do it.

I worked at a place that used pre sliced onions for rings and what it is that if they’ve gotten old they start to break down and “weep” and this gives them a completely different but not at all unpleasant flavor profile. Smells awesome as well.
So try slicing an onion and putting it in a ziplock and squeezing out as much air as you can before sealing it, then let it sit in the fridge for a few days, or half freeze and thaw, see if that’s similar to Wendys
Natural-Pineapple886
Not onions, onioffs.
Expensive-Border-869
I worked at Wendy’s and did prep its because of what we did to the onions but it’s illegal for me to tell you specifically. Let me just say we “sliced” the onions with a “machine” if you feel my vibe

the square hamburger makes everything taste better.
